I was walking through the university library here in Barbados and saw a mahogany sculpture entitled “Unity”, which was credited to “Kenneth Blackman”. The short description of the piece outlined beside it allowed me to gain greater insight into what the artwork was portraying and I felt washed with pride at being a Barbadian, a Caribbean woman. You see, what Blackman managed to sculpt into that piece of mahogany was a vision of true Caribbean togetherness and interdependence which we have longed for since our coming forth into independence but have failed to do so because of our concomitant attitudes of insularity. Although a Barbadian, I had not heard of this artist before and decided to use google to find out more. This article was truly a pleasant finding! Thank you.
